The Secrets of a Good Makeup Brush

The Secrets of a Good Makeup Brush

ood makeup brush is the key to a great makeup. Where does one begin – after all there’s so much choice these days, makeup brushes are made from sable, squirrel, goat, badger, pony hair to synthetic bristles materials, on the tips of brightly painted wooden bodies.

I recommend makeup brushes from MAC, Bobby Brown, Giorgio Armani, and ADesign, but my personal favourite is a smashing new range of exquisite hand made makeup brushes made in England and designed by movie makeup artist ‘Sian Richards’. This revolutionary makeup brush range can be purchased directly from ‘The London Brush Company.’ Having tested Sian’s entire makeup brush range I must say that her brushes perform exactly as she promised. Sian has the achieved every makeup artists dream – The perfect makeup brush. Sian states “A great makeup brush needs to make applying makeup easy. It must be soft, flexible, and durable, clean up well, be balanced and look good. Her brushes do just that.

If you’re squeamish about applying your makeup with animal bristles then select a good quality synthetic brush. The best synthetic brushes are made from Taklon, which is made from a polyester fibre designed to mimic the characteristics of natural hair. It is smooth and soft. Synthetic brushes are often easier to clean making them more hygienic than animal brush bristles. Taklon is also vegan and animal cruelty free.

It does matter how much you may spend on makeup if your brushes are useless. Useless meaning when you apply your makeup you are fighting a loosing battle with countless bristles as they fall out of your makeup brush every time you apply your makeup or wash your makeup bristles.

Good quality professional makeup brushes are worth their weight in gold and worth every penny. If you look after them your makeup brushes will last for years.

Which Brush For Which Makeup?

Some of the best powder brushes are made from badger hair. Sable is often used for smaller, finer makeup brushes because of its rich, silky texture, whilst squirrel hair is often the most expensive and manufactures mix the bristles with pony hair to bring down the price of the makeup brush.

Concealer: Concealer brushes should be a soft brush to blend the concealer, especially when applying concealer to the delicate skin underneath the eyes.

Foundation: For a well applied, flawless foundation finish, apply liquid foundation with a foundation brush that has thick firm bristles, a brush that is flexible will have good blending ability and should feel soft on the face. Powder brushes, also called kabuki brushes, are great. Ideal for brushing on face powder and ultra-fine mineral makeup. Eyeshadow: For the base shadow (all over the lid) use a brush that is flat, thick and stiff. For the lid colour (on lid up to the crease), use a brush that is firm, flat and compact as you will be placing darker pigmented colour in this area and you want control in placement so you do not have fallout of shadow onto the face. For outer corner use a rounded, tapered, soft brush to blend in your shadow.

Eyebrow And Eyeliner: Always use a slim, firm, angled brush. I prefer a synthetic for applying my eyeliner as the bristles are firmer and offer a far more precise eyeliner application.

Blush: The best brush shape for applying blush is an angled, rounded, medium-firm brush. The angle helps create contour on the cheeks and is also great for application onto the temples and apples of the cheeks.

If you are looking to purchase good quality brushes, I would recommend brushes from MAC, ADesign, Bobby Brown, Giorgio Armani, and Ve Neill (vesfavoritebrushes.com). You can find professional cosmetic brushes online for a fraction of the price you would spend on brushes found in a traditional beauty supply store. Don't cheat yourself out of quality makeup brushes: the right brush puts makeup on the right way. No finger smudging or messing around with Q-tips or ratty cotton balls! When you use quality makeup brushes, you take your look to the next level. A high-quality professional makeup brush makes a difference in the way your makeup goes on and stays on. It's a difference you can see!
