Out with the Old and in with a New Set of ‘Makeup Brushes’

If you’re considering treating yourself to a new set of makeup brushes you don’t need to spend a fortune. Not only is buying a costly makeup brush set impossible for most of us, it’s not necessary, especially when there are so many great affordable makeup sets out there.

Finding the right makeup brushes is important as it will make all the difference to perfecting your makeup look, with so many to choose from it’s hard to know where to start. The first thing to decide is do you prefer synthetic or animal hair brushes? They both perform well. Synthetic bristles are precise and ideal for applying liquids and cream makeup products, whilst natural/animal bristles are ideal for applying powder based products, this why often you will find a mix of both makeup brushes in a set. However, if you don’t like the idea of using animal bristles then there are plenty of synthetic brush sets you can buy.

Set One:  DRQ – 32 professional brushes retail at a price that’s very affordable!  This is the set I recommend to my students doing the professional foundation makeup course at my studio. The brush heads are a combination of soft white synthetic and natural hair and work well applying all mediums of makeup. What is important is that the brushes don’t shed bristles. For ladies who love pink these brushes would make a lovely gift, especially with Valentine’s day around the corner.

Three Tips How to Look After Your Makeup Brushes.

Keep your makeup brushes in tip-top shape and ensure the bristles stay soft and bacteria-free longer. I recommend washing brushes at least once a week. If you have used a silicone based makeup, ensure to wash the brush after use.

1 – Pour a drop of baby shampoo into the palm of your hand or pour into a small container and mix with warm soapy water.

2 – Put the bristles into the solution and soak for two minutes before cleaning the brush tips in the water, being careful to not bend the bristles on the bottom of the container. For particularly dirty brushes repeat the process until they are clean.

3 – Rinse well, then gently squeeze excess water from the brush add a drop of hair conditioner, rinse well and then squeeze excess water out using a paper towel and let air-dry. Another tip to blow dry the bristles is to use a hair dryer on a low heat, at least twelve inches away for the bristles.

4 – Don’t soak brushes in the sink. Too much time in water can loosen the bristles and destroy your brush!
