How to Apply Eyeliner

Tips How to Apply ‘Liquid, Pencil and Gel Eyeliners’

Eyeliner is an important finishing touch for most eye makeup looks – Eyeliner will accentuate your eyes with anything from a subtle, soft eye-line to strong dramatic wings or cat’s eyes. All it takes is patience and a little practice to really make your eyes pop using an eyeliner pencil, a liquid liner, or gel liner.

‘Liquid Eyeliners’ – Make sure you give the eyeliner a good shake it’s important the liquid is mixed well inside the tube. Take the brush from the eyeliner tube and remove the excess product onto a tissue; this will avoid getting unwanted, excessive blobs of eyeliner on the eyelid.

The simplest way to succeed with liquid eyeliners is to draw a powder line first. Dip an eyeliner makeup brush in water then a black or brown eye-shadow, fill the brush tip with product, again removing the excess powder on the tip of eyeliner brush on a tissue, now you can begin to create the upper lash line. Start your eye line in the middle of the upper lashes. Place the brush tip against the upper lash line so that it is as close as possible to the eyelashes, gently apply eyeliner along the upper lash line, move the brush tip towards the outer edge of the lashes, next feather a fine line towards the inner edge of the upper lash line. Always use soft, little strokes to blend. Once you’re happy with the shape it’s time to apply a liquid liner topcoat. Use the same process you used with the eyeshadow to achieve a perfect even line along the upper lashes.

Don’t worry if you make a mistake, dip a cotton bud into a liquid makeup remover and gently wipe away the excess liner.

‘Eyeliner Pencil’ – Always make sure you have a good pencil point to work with. Sharpen the tip with an ordinary pencil sharpener, not only does this make the pencil easier to work with, this ensures the product stays germ free.

The best way to apply an eyeliner pencil is to position your fingers on the outer edge of your upper lash line and pull the skin outwards gently so that the eyelid is taut. By raising the eyebrow it will make the eye muscles tight. This makes it easier to pencil in a straight even line along the upper lashes. I usually begin in the inner corner of the eye and go across to the outer eye. Take your time and use short, soft strokes to create an even line.

‘Gel Eyeliners’ – Gels often come in a small pot and the product can dry out quickly, so make sure you replace the lid quickly. If it dries out try adding one drop of baby oil, this normally brings the gel back to life.

To use gel only put the gel onto one side of the brush, remove the excess on the side of the pot. To apply gel eyeliner I start at the inner lash line and blend towards the middle of the eye, next work the gel into the middle of the eye from the outer lash line, finish by joining the two lines. Another trick with gel eyeliner is to make several dots along your lash line and connect the dots to make a line.

Useful Eyeliner Tips
SMOKY EYES – To create smokey or a smudged effect try blending a little eyeshadow along the edge of the liner.

WINGS & CATS EYES – Will always intensify your makeup look and the eyes to really pop. The trick here is to follow the natural curve of the outer lash line upwards form the outer corner of your eyelid. To get a straight line for the wing I always use a soft piece of card against the outer edge of your eyelid at an angle and trace along the edge with the liquid liner. Another tip here is to use tape to make your wings. Position tape along the lower lashes line so that it’s on an angle and along the outer edge of the lower lash line, extending up towards your eyebrow. Then, fill in the wing as needed. You can tilt the tape as much or as little as you want, but keep in mind that more tilt will look more dramatic. For cat’s eyes follow the natural shape of the upper eyelid, the side of a coin can be a great help to create an ideal curve.
